Gulshan, how do you reflect on your time working in Konkona Sen Sharma’s directorial debut?
'A Death In The Gunj' is the only film I truly cherished from the moment I first watched it. I attended its premiere at MAMI in a crowded Regal Cinema and was so engrossed that I forgot I was part of it! Interestingly, Konkona had initially considered me for a different role, Vikramjit.
What led to the change?
Honestly, I was quite keen on portraying Vikramjit. However, I was aware that Konkona had always envisioned Ranvir Shorey for that role, even though they had separated by then. I told her that if they could find a way to collaborate, I would gladly step aside, as he was her first choice. Fortunately, they managed to work together despite their circumstances.
That was very gracious of you!
Subsequently, I was offered the role of Nandu, which is loosely inspired by Konkona’s late father, writer Mukul Sharma. I accepted it because I believed in the story and wanted to support the team behind this project.
Was there a difference in being directed by a woman?
I didn’t notice any significant difference between male and female directors. However, since Konkona penned the script and the narrative was deeply personal to her, she infused it with her utmost passion, which was both powerful and moving.
Did Konkona's personal connection to the screenplay affect her?
I observed her becoming emotional at various points during the shoot. I truly appreciated the cast, many of whom were friends and individuals I admired. Om Puri, who played my father, was already facing health challenges but remained humorous and warm with everyone.
You had the unique chance to work with the legendary Tanuja?
Tanuja ji was incredibly warm and welcoming to all. I thoroughly enjoyed our time together at the actual location where the story unfolds. We shared 34-35 delightful days in the winter of Jharkhand.
Om Puri passed away before the film's release?
Sadly, Omji didn’t live to see the film's release, and he often comes to mind when I think of 'A Death In The Gunj.' Despite his health issues, he was always sharp from Action to Cut.
Did the film's underperformance affect your spirits?
Many people don’t realize that 'A Death In The Gunj' was actually profitable when analyzing the ROI (return on investment) for the producers. Even though there’s a prevailing notion that making such films is challenging, there will always be storytellers willing to take that risk.
What projects are you currently working on?
I can’t disclose details about two projects I’m currently involved in. However, you can expect to see me in 'Little Thomas,' a small indie film, if all goes well. It is set to be showcased in New York at NIFF this June.
